Connector options for feeder panels
What diameter round bale
is best? 48" to 54"
A 6 ft diameter bale often leaves an
18" core. This requires human time
and assistance to adjust both the core
and the feeder.
Bales 48" to 54" diameter are
smaller than most other bales in the
Midwest, but they allow sheep or
goats to eat the entire bale without
assistance. We find the difference in
reduced hassle and labor is so large
that the cost (plastic to wrap baleage)
for smaller bales is well worth it.
What not to do…
1. Don’t use with cattle, horses or
other large animals.
2. Don’t use with horned sheep or
goats. They may get their heads
caught and die.
3. Don’t try to lift the feeder panels
with a tractor loader when
they’re frozen or stuck in a
manure pack. If you do, they will
bend and break.
4. Don’t let panels freeze into
the mud.
5. Don’t try to feed more than 8
ewes per panel. Too many ewes
will fight for access—which
results in “poor-doing” (or dead)
sheep. Buy an additional feeder.
Premier Tip…
To eliminate the risk of sheep
tipping over an empty feeder and
injuring themselves and others in so
doing, drive a single steel post into
the ground and secure one corner of
the bale feeder to it. The post can stay
in place all winter.
Having noted this, we admit that
we rarely do it. Sometimes the sheep
tip over an empty feeder. We know
it’s a risk. Our last injury or death in
a feeder was 6 years ago. 3/8"
