Waterer use and placement
• To introduce a new water source, take each chick in your hand and dip its beak into the water.
• Game bird hatchlings are very small; when starting them, use narrow based, drown-proof waterers.
• Keep waterer level. This enables the float or valves to function properly.
• Clean the waterer. Hard-water deposits, algae, or debris may block valves.
• Keep water clean by placing waterers above ground level on concrete blocks, bricks, a Chick Tray (p. 29) or Chick Stand (at right).
• Change outdoor locations often to reduce the proliferation of mud holes.
• Do not place waterers in the sun—shaded locations reduce evaporation and keep
water cooler.
Offering waterers for all poultry and waterfowl
Clean, fresh water is essential for the health of your birds.
Start with 1" of space per bird and increase by 1/4" each week until each bird has about 4" of space. A chicken will drink 1–2 cups daily.
See waterer comparison chart page 26.

TOP PICK
Top Fill Waterers
I liked the 3 gal so much, I bought a 1.5 gal too. So easy to fill. I have used them with and without the legs. With the legs when my flock was young, kept it high enough so shavings, etc. stayed out of the water. Without the legs now as adults, I hang them from the ceiling of coop and run—so versatile. These waterers are great!
