How to set up What is a brooder?
a Brooder What about bedding?
Insulates the brooder floor. Provides chicks something to
scratch in.
Absorbs moisture from droppings and leaky waterers (replace the latter). Needs replaced often. All birds, even small chicks, will soil it quickly. Heavily used bedding is unhealthy for birds. (And smells!)
It’s a chick’s first home. Ideally, it should be as warm and secure as a mother hen.
The brooder can be as simple as a cardboard box with bedding and a heat lamp—or
a commercial appliance designed for hundreds of chicks.
Why do I need a brooder?
Mailed or artificially incubated poultry lack a “mother” to raise them. The brooder provides the safety and warmth of the hen, while ensuring hurdle-free access to feed and water.
Best placed in an easily monitored, warm, predator and draft free location.
CLEAN BEDDING = CLEAN CHICKS = HEALTHY, LIVE BIRDS

Suggested bedding:
• Peat Moss (dusty but our favorite) • Chopped straw
• Wood shavings
• Crushed corncobs
• Sand
We don’t recommend sawdust because its small size can be too enticing to hungry, curious chicks.
