  Square Buckets
Flat sides are best for stability on pen walls and better fit of teat units.
4 gallon—for large orphan groups. Also more space for ice containers to keep milk cold (see tip below left).
2 gallon—small, adaptable, easy to hang. For small orphan groups or supplementing.
How to drill your own holes
Mark center of hole 1.5" up from floor of bucket.
Drill 1.5" diameter hole.
Insert teat unit and tighten.
Teats
Latex—Have the most “teat-like” feel, but they are less durable
Rubber—For aggressive lambs/kids

What’s the right height for a bucket teat?
At natural teat height, about 9"-12" above the ground. Why so low? When a young ruminant stretches out its neck to nurse, their esophagus elongates and forms a groove that carries the milk into the 4th stomach (the abomasum).
If the neck is not stretched, the milk falls into the first stomach instead of the 4th. The first stomach is intended for grass or hay.
It doesn’t digest milk well. A first stomach with too much milk enlarges to form a “potbelly”—and the lamb/kid can’t thrive.
Milk temperature—
warm vs cold?
Mother’s milk is warm, but it is produced constantly in only small amounts—so lambs cannot consume too much at one time. Orphan buckets supply milk in large amounts. If the milk is warm, healthy orphans consume too much at a time. Warm milk spoils rapidly. So we use warm milk only for newborns. Then we switch
to cold milk. Cold milk forces lambs/kids to self-regulate their intake (they become chilled and stop drinking).
TIP: KEEPING MILK COLD
We freeze water in plastic bottles or jugs and drop them into the buckets.
EASY GRIP TAB
Helps remove lid. Even weak fingers can do it.
LATEX
(up to 8-10 days of age)
Fits Premier’s square buckets. To prevent a vacuum in the bucket, puncture a small hole in the lid.
