Clippers & Shears
  18
Clipping & shearing tools for livestock, show animals and dogs
Solutions for all flocks...
Our clippers and shearing machines cover all hair and fiber removal tasks found on the farm or the show ring.
Those that travel to shows or have stock in far off fields should look to battery operated clippers or shears for their portability.
Small, low-cost clippers are available
for those that may need to only trim a few animals, where flexibility and detail work is more important than speed.
If 110V power is accessible, plug-in machines remain our choice.
Before you buy...
Q. What species will be shorn or clipped?
A. See recommendations for clipping (p. 20) & shearing (p. 28).
Q. What result do you need (show finish or farm)?
A. For simple removal, a shearing machine will go through
dirty matted hair/fiber faster and easier than a clipping machine. For a close, show-tight finish, use a clipper.
Q. What is your experience level?
A. Clipping machine—much easier to set up and use.
Shearing machine—at first a learning curve, then you’ll find this pushes quickly through dirty, heavy fiber and hair.
Q. What size of machine will you need?
A. Large for removing large amounts of hair quickly. Small for
fine, precision work.
Common mistakes
1. Improperly tensioned or dull blades, combs and cutters
• Overtension—reduces longevity.
• Undertension—reduces cutting ability of the comb/cutter.
2. Failure to apply oil frequently Lubrication reduces friction and increases the cutting longevity.
3. Not cleaning the air filters To reduce heat build-up—remove filters and scrub with soap and water. Dry and reattach.
4. “Air-shearing” If operating the machine outside of fiber, the extra friction dulls the cutting equipment.
5. Wrong machine for the job. Too much or too little power result in a poor experience.
