Shepherds Crooks
Why use a crook?
Animals have long had the advantage over humans: 4 legs, hooves for traction, peripheral vision, speed and a strong sense of when “something’s up.” It’s hard for us to compete.
A good crook improves your chances (and ability) by suddenly making your arms much longer—even if the passing years reduce your agility.
Essential tools...
Once you learn how useful they are, you find that moving stock without a crook is “wasting time”. Because of the nature of their use, crooks
wear, bend or break. That’s the bad news. The good news is they’re affordable—so they’re less painful to replace.
• But if you have just one, it’s rarely where you need it. Like electric fence testers, we have several throughout the farm—stashed away in the barns, trucks or ATVs.
• We also keep them in our work vehicles. Loading stock on/off trailers, directing an animal loose in Premier’s parking lot. For us, keeping a spare (or ten) is prudent.

How to utilize neck and leg crooks...
1. Using a neck crook...
Hook the crook around the animal’s neck and twist. This applies pressure around the neck to lock animal in place. Neck crook openings can’t match every animal’s neck. Wool thickness changes and ewe neck size varies.
2. Why leg crooks for goats?
• Goats prefer to face you—so it works best to snag a front foot.
• Goats’ agility, slender neck and hair mean neck crooks may fail.
3. Catch a ewe with newborns on pasture...
1) Catch the lambs and hold onto them with one hand.
2) Then lay a leg crook between the
3) When the ewe’s front foot is near, instantly raise the crook and snare her front leg.
4. The best for hair sheep?
Same crooks as for wool, both types have similarly sized neck and legs.
Crooks have many uses...
• Catch lambs and kids on the run. • Close out-of-reach gates.
• Lift newborns out of pens.
• Sort out rams from ewes.
• Guide sheep and goats through handling yards.
• As an easily seen pointing device to your helpers, “move there!”
