Producers that set-stock or regraze a pasture within 30 days of previous grazing have a heightened risk of having detrimental parasitic loads among their flocks. Conventional methods of control often involve deworming or
a change in management practices (rotationally grazing with longer rest periods). Fortunately, there is another tool in our tool box: BioWorma. It’s a naturally occurring fungus (Duddingtonia flagrans) that consumes infective worm larvae.
When fed to grazing animals, the spores pass through the digestive system, having no effect within the host animal, and out into the manure. When
the larvae become active within the manure, the fungus forms a web that captures, paralyzes and consumes infective larvae.
Duddingtonia flagrans reduces the number of gastrointestinal nematode larvae on pasture.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Q. When do I need to feed BioWormaor Livamol? A. When the flock is on set-stocked
pastures or returning to an earlier pasture within 30 days.
Q. Will fungus get “established” on my farm? A. No. Once the fungus has consumed the
larvae in the manure it will die.
Q. Is it by seasonal change?
A. Recommended for strategic use during
periods when weather conditions are conducive to larval development and transmission onto pasture at temperatures above 40°F (5°C).
Q. Does it affect dung beetles or earthworms? A. There are no negative effects on non-
target soil nematodes, earthworms, microarthropods, soil bacteria or fungi. Beneficial insects feeding or breeding on manure (e.g. dung beetles, fly larvae) are not negatively affected.
Q. Can I feed it to pregnant ewes?
A. There are no precautions for feeding
to pregnant animals.
