Raising Backyard Chickens
They're fun. They're simple. They're in your backyard!
We love our chickens! And it begins with eggs...
Many of us have raised poultry since childhood—either for the table, as 4-H projects at the county fair, or as our first business selling eggs.
Chickens (and other small poultry) are easy to handle and relatively affordable to raise in small spaces. All of which makes raising chickens both enjoyable and worthwhile on the farm or the backyard.
How many eggs will a hen lay?
A young hen can lay 5 eggs/week during peak laying season, depending on her breed. Leghorns and Australorps are heavy producers of white or brown eggs. As hens age, they lay fewer eggs per week/month/year. The slowdown typically occurs after year two.
How late in the season will a hen lay?
Hens need at least 12-14 hours of daylight to maintain production. As the days shorten, supplemental light can be used to reduce the drop. Even with extra light, production drops off in late fall and increases in the spring.
