How an electric fence works...
When animals touch a fence...
DRY / HARD SOILS?
1. The energizer pushes an electric pulse through its “+” terminal to the fence conductors (horizontal strands).
2. The pulse travels along the fence through the conductors.
3. When an animal touches the fence, the pulse enters the animal and travels through it to the soil.
4. After exiting the animal, the pulse enters the energizer’s ground rod via soil moisture.
5. The pulse power that returns equals the shock effect. Note: time from touch to shock is less than one second.

shock, the animal must touch both a positive (+) (hot) and negative (–) (grounded) strand.
This will deliver the full power of the pulse, but the fence needs added maintenance.
For–Pos+/Neg Netting see p. 63
Most fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, dry, sandy or rocky areas lack the moisture for proper function.
Pos/Neg nets are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Half the strands are connected to the ground system, reducing reliance on soil moisture. PowerLinks make the secondary ground connection.
For moist conditions modify a Pos/Neg net to an all hot net.

What’s the difference?
PermaNet
1. Single Spike (SS)*—the best choice, unless your soils are always soft.
2. Double Spike (DS)*—for soft soils. Spikes can be stepped in. If soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are difficult to install/remove.
3. Drivable (DP)—for installing net in dry, hard or rocky soils. Use a dead blow hammer (p. 73).
*SS & DS are not intended for use with hammer.

• Thicker line posts.
• Longer ground spikes.
• Resists side strain, wind, rain, ice
and snow; therefore, can be left in
place for a longer period of time.
