High quality is essential!
Consider that a fence insulator must:
• Resist millions of high-voltage pulses
• Resist damage by imperfect installation
• Resist UV sunlight degradation
• Resist wire strain
• Withstand high-speed animal impacts
Select the right insulator…
1. Post type. Wood, steel, FiberRod?
2. Conductor. Must be securely held and
without damage from the insulator.
3. Function. End, corner or line post?
Match the insulator to the expected
conductor strain.
4. Color/aesthetics. White is the most
visible, making it the safest. Black
blends too easily.
5. Animal safety. Use caps to cover sharp posts. Avoid
insulators with sharp edges.
6. Ease of installation. Insulators that can be installed
with power drivers are easy to install.
7. UV resistance. High quality black is best. White is
next. Both outlast substandard black plastic.
Steel posts for electric fences?
They work—but it is critical that steel post insulators not
break or snap off. If an energized strand touches steel, the
pulse will travel down into the soil. The fence “shorts out”
and animals will escape.
Insulators used on or near steel posts must hold the
conductor 100% of the time—take extra care to see that
insulators are properly installed and secured.
The more plastic between the insulator and the steel
post, the lower the risk of the pulse traveling down the
post into the ground.
Line or corner insulator?
Line post or offset insulators are best for straight or
semi-straight fences. Corner insulators are for sharp
curves or hard turns.
