MARKING Nylon CRAYONS
 Why mark at breeding?
A vivid mark from crayons or raddle (p. 100) is hard to miss. Key shepherding decisions are made based on knowing what happens during breeding season. Use the tools on these pages to ensure maximum profitability.
It allows shepherds to know:
• Which ewes/does have been
bred. Unbred females are culled. (However, we give some first-year breeders a second chance.)
• Birthing date (145 days after breeding), so you can feed accordingly in late gestation and better prepare for lambing.
• Newborn’s sire—track sires that offer the most profit.
• Identify poor performing or inactive males.

  HARNESS USE TIPS:
1. Adjust frequently. Rams and bucks lose weight during breeding season.
2. If the forelegs begin to chafe, adjust harness or add padding/covering.
3. Crayon fits on brisket, between the forelegs.
4. Place harness on rams before breeding season so they’re accustomed to wearing them.
