Breeding Supplies
Using marking pastes instead of a harness and crayon
Marking paste made from raddle powder or pre-mixed Marksman eliminates the need for a marking harness (with no leg chafing on rams/bucks). Long-lasting marks.
The brisket and neck need 2-3 months of fiber growth to hold the paste. To use multiple colors on one ram, start with lightest color, reapply later with darker color.
Stand the buck or ram to apply paste. Use gloves (see p. 101) to keep hands from becoming dyed.
Rams can be tipped into a Deck Chair (pp. 68-69) to apply marking compound and check hoof condition.
Marks are not always scourable–particularly if vegetable oil is used.
Raddle Powder
Produces bright, long-lasting marks, but it’s more mess than harness crayon.
Mix 2 parts powder to 1 part vegetable oil or 1.5 part mineral oil. Rub paste onto the brisket. (Two months’ wool/hair growth on brisket helps hold the paste.)
You will need to reapply fresh raddle every 2 to 5 days. Can be applied to either wet or dry fleece. 3.3 lb. container.
Not scourable.
Marksman Marking Paste
Our shepherd’s go-to marking fluid during the breeding season.
Premixed sheep and goat identification raddle. Leaves long-lasting and unmistakable identification. Will not separate or deteriorate while in storage. Do not freeze. Can be applied to either wet or dry fleece. Reapply fresh paste every 2 to 3 days. 2.5 liter.
