• Stronger and safer than the common metal lamp holders.
• Heat from 250 watt bulbs used nonstop for more than 6 months may
degrade the plastic.

• Minimal wire protective “grid” allows bulb to be too close to sheep
and goats.
• Metal becomes “hot-to-the-touch.”
• Failure-prone hanging system.
Hanging the orange lamp relies on a spring
wire clip that is part of the lamp. We use both
the power cord and a rope as backup support
(see p. 60). It pays to do this right!
Heat Lamp DO’s:
1. Use 175 watt bulbs.
250 watt bulbs cost more to use per hour
and, in our experience, are not needed.
2. Use PAR (pressed glass) bulbs. Far more
durable. See page 60.
3. Tie or clip them very securely—(p. 60)
particularly if adult sheep, goats or pigs
are exposed to them.
A lamp that falls onto animals and/or
bedding has consequences that can be
very serious—including a fire.
Heat Lamp DON’Ts:
1. Don’t hang them closer than 18" from
bedding or baby animals that can’t move
away from them.
2. Don’t enclose them in barrels or similar
small spaces. The heat must be allowed
to move away from the lamps.
3. Don’t use heat lamps any longer than
necessary. (We hear reports of folks
using them continuously for 2-3 months.)
Lambs and kids only need extra heat
when they are weak or wet newborns or
suffering from hypothermia.
