Requires strong support posts at ends, corners and major curves. When introduced to sites with an active deer herd, scent caps are advised (see p. 56) . What are scent caps and how do they work? They are metal bottle caps with absorbent material inside that are attached to the fence and then baited with apple scent ( see p. 56). Deer are immediately attracted to the apple scent. When they sniff the cap they receive a strong shock and learn to stay awayfrom the fence.

Points to consider…
Deer are creatures of habit—when breaking a habit (such as
visiting a garden or tree planting) the deterrent must be strong.
To accomplish this:
• Deer have a high internal resistance. So use an energizer that
produces a strong, high output, high voltage pulse.
• Make sure the fence is always properly energized. Setting up
the fence and installing the energizer a day or so later may
seriously reduce its effectiveness.
• Bait the fence so deer are encouraged to touch the fence and
thus receive a painful, memorable shock.
• If using a solar energizer, make sure it is facing due south—to
take advantage of the most available sunlight. Never set the
energizer in the shade.
