The first fiber-rod posts we used had
no outer coating—which resulted in
painful fiberglass splinters for those
who handled them. Nasty indeed.
To prevent this, all Premier Smooth-
Cote FiberRods now have an extra UV
resistant urethane outer coating.
Pros and Cons of FiberRods
• Less likely to break than some
plastic posts—although they
eventually will if bent often enough.
• Make good line posts for fences
with
minimal side, up or down pressure.
• Self-insulating. But they need some
form of a clip to hold the twine,
tape, rope or wire in place.
• Neither as heavy nor as bulky as
steel or wood posts. Easy to carry.
• Harder to install than FiberTuff,
PigTail or PowerPosts. Can be hit
with a hammer if using a drive cap
(see column at right)
. Otherwise use a
rubber or wooden mallet.
•
Wire clips are inclined to entangle
with each other.
Plastic clips are a
better choice.
• Not suited for situations exposed to
up, down or side strain.
Note: See chart on p. 122 that compares
various post types for their ability to resist
side-strain. 3/8" rods don’t do so well but
11/16" rods excel.

Only ScrewOn insulators (see B on p. 127) work for 1/2" rods.
