Combs & Cutters Our combs and cutters (with the exception of a few from Heiniger) are from a Chinese firm. Premier has long been its exclusive US outlet. Should the source be a concern? Not according to our tests. In blind tests, the quality of our combs and cutters has consistently equalled or exceeded all brands except one (Heiniger). Why do our combs and cutters cost up to 25% less than others? Because we buy direct and rarely sell through resellers. It’s as simple as that. Do folks like our combs & cutters? We sell over 10,000 a year. Our sales continue to increase. Where can I get them sharpened after they become dull? Premier provides world-class service with rapid turnaround, precision finish and low cost. See pp. 34–35 for our resharpening prices and information.

cut through camelid fiber.

Tensioning Cutters

Why the correct tension on

shear heads is so critical!

Too little tension—Results?

1. Wool will get under the cutter and

it will stop cutting. If this happens

remove the cutter, clean out the wool,

replace the cutter, then reset the

tension—a little tighter than before.

2. On some shear heads the cutter may

fly off. This allows the forks to drop

between the comb’s teeth—which in

turn strips the drive gear. A truly bad

result because it can’t be used until

the gear is replaced.

Too much tension—Results?

Causes excessive friction between

comb and cutter.

This causes rapid wear of the cutting

edges and excess heat.

To get it right:

Tighten the tension knob, until

resistance is felt, to force the cutter

against the comb. Then screw it 1/2 turn

more. Apply shearing oil

(see p. 41)

to the

comb and cutter. Turn on the machine.

Tweak tension according to blade heat/

cutting ability. Adjust cautiously while

operating to find the

sweet spot.

CUSTOMER REVIEW Nicest machine I’ve owned over the years! Ready to go right out of the case! Sheared 3 BIG rams in less time than it actually took to get them haltered and out of their pen. Not as loud as my old pair of Shearmasters or as heavy and they don’t vibrate as much either. Even sheared through the ram’s dirty fleeces very easily. —Hannah P. from IN Read more reviews on our website.
