Up to 5 strands
With the exception of portable
fences, this is the least expensive
fence option. It’s also simple to
install, visible, effective, attractive
and minimally affected by wind.
Consists of electrified rope (up to
5 strands, though 2 or 3 are more
common) stretched hand-tight
between wood or steel end and
corner posts.
Line posts are wood or steel T posts.
They can be spaced up to 35 ft apart.
As the ropes are only tensioned to
less than 40 lb, end and corner brace
assemblies are usually not required.
Springs are installed at one end of
each rope to better maintain tension.
For areas with long dry periods,
using a wide-impedance energizer is
advised. See pp 79-101 for details.

Rope FencesSemi-Permanent
Uses
Because this design is easy to install, its
uses are many—including:
• Subdividing pastures.
• Keeping horses away from hazards.
• Separating horses.
• Excluding livestock.
• Protecting trees.
• Horse lanes from corrals to pastures.
• An interim fence until a permanent
fence can be installed.
Cost: as low as 40¢ per ft
The key factors that affect the cost are:
• Choice and size of rope.
• Number of strands of rope.
• Type of line posts. Steel and wood are
more expensive but last longer.
• Choice of energizer. Solar units are the
most $$. AC plug-ins are the least $$.
Note:
The line post cost per ft and the energizer
cost per ft are similar for any number of strands.
