Adding 1 or 2 energized strands
to any fence helps to protect
horses from a fence—and the
fence from the horse.
Place the electrified strand at the
height of your horse’s nose when
it walks.
The distance a strand should be
held away (offset) from a fence
varies. For vinyl or wood fences
2" is enough. However, because
the risk of injury is greater, for
HT wire fences we think the
maximum (7"-9") is best.
Uses
• Prevents horses fighting across
paddock fences.
• Keeps horses from leaning,
rubbing or chewing on fences.
• Enables worn and weary
fences to last a few more years.
• Gives longevity to new fences.
• Keeps horses away from less-
safe fences (HT, barbed wire).
• Carries pulses from an
energizer in the barn to
outlying fences.
Cost: as low as 9¢ per ft
The cost of a Guard Strand is
only the cost of the conductor,
insulators and energizer.
Which conductor? IntelliRope®
PE 4.5 works well and is less $$.
Which insulator? Depends
on the existing fence. Review
our insulators (pp. 130–135) and
choose those that match your line,
end and corner posts.
A single strand of electrified rope keeps horses from leaning on, reaching over, rubbing or chewing valuable fences. Note
its location behind the upper wood horizontal—aesthetically out of sight to people outside of the fence. If needed, add a
second (lower) conductor to deter foals, ponies and mini horses.
