MotherUp ® Spray Improves the odds of grafting success by changing the smell of the lamb. White spray solution is made from natural plant oils. Can be used with biological or adoptive dams. In use by a South Dakota sheep farm for the past 8 years with (they tell us) a high success rate. Used in Premier’s lambing barn last winter with some success. 16 fl oz bottle. Shake before applying. Pros • It’s one more thing that can be done to aid in grafting. • Easier to use and apply than Pine Tar. Cons • Works, at times at Premier. • Relies on anecdotal evidence (not formally tested by an independent entity). MotherUp Spray, 1.90 lb.............#558500 $18.00 Orphan Headgate Enables orphans to nurse. Ewe can’t see or smell the lamb so she lets it nurse. Some ewes (not all) eventually accept the lambs. Fits into existing lambing jugs with 2 metal connecting pins (not included). Neck slot adjusts with movable pin (included) . Hot-dip galvanized, 36.5" wide. Headgate, 32 lb.........................#909000 $121.00 * Pin, 3', 2.10 lb.............................#151200 $5.15 *Additional handling fee of $20 per item. Use the adjustable pin to set the width of neck slot. Slot should be wide enough for the ewe to move her headup/down but not wide enough to remove her head from the headgate.
Grafting,
does it work?
It does, but time is of the essence.
Graft lambs/kids immediately!
Works best when ewe (or doe) is still
birthing. How? Place your arm into
the ewe and pull out your clenched fist
to simulate an additional birth. She’ll
look for the extra “lamb.”
Grafting options
•
Slime graft.
This involves covering
the lamb to be grafted with the
placenta of the lamb it’s replacing or
accompanying.
• Skin graft.
If a ewe has lost a lamb,
skin it and cover the lamb to be
grafted with the hide.
• Stanchion.
If lamb to be grafted
is several days old, use an Orphan
Headgate. Place ewe in a grafting
stanchion before she sees/smells the
lamb. Put the lamb in the pen.
• Pine tar.
Apply to the top of the
lamb’s tail and around the dam’s
nose. Ewe will smell the lamb and
recognize it as hers.
•
MotherUp Spray.
We have yet
to prove its effectiveness, but it is
considered an aid.
In our experience—culling for
mothering ability increases grafting
success.
Note:
Grafting success is less
than 100%. It still depends on the mother
to accept the lamb/kid.
